Who hasn’t seen bulls in El Puerto…

…does not know what a day of bullfighting is”.

This mythical phrase of Joselito “El Gallo”, pronounced in a chatting after a bullfight  in San Sebastián back in 1916, sums up perfectly the feel of this bullring. In fact, in the commemoration of its century was reflected in a mosaic of tiles placed at the main entrance.

Talking about El Puerto de Santa María is talking about bulls, a city with a tremendous bullfighting tradition.

The bullring of El Puerto was inaugurated on June 5 and 6, 1880 with a double bullfight where Antonio Carmona “Gordito”, from Seville, and the Rafael Molina “Lagartijo”, from Córdoba, fought bulls from Anastasio Martín and Saltillo. The project was a work of Mariano Carderera and Manuel Pardo, and its execution was carried out by a company formed by a group of illustrious people who were presided by D. Tomás Osborne Böhl de Faber.

But yet in the s. XVIII were celebrated bullfights in the Place of the Galeras, conditioned for it, and that was the anteceden of the wooden bullrings that were built in the same place in which today is this arena, considered one of the most beautiful of Spain.

It is a polygonal plant building with 60 sides, 99 meters in diameter, three floors and a 60 meter ring, one of the largest. It has capacity for more than 12,000 people.

Best bullfighters heve historically fought in El Puerto the and this has been conserved over time.

The fair of this year, again has come with all the incentives to make the town of Cadiz a reference.

After the steer bullfight without horses of the past July 22, today will take place the one with horses of Lagunajanda for young bullfighters Daniel Crespo, Miguel Angel Pacheco and Rodrigo Molina.

Next Friday, August 4 begins the series of bullfights, full of figures and young promises. Juan Jose Padilla, Jose Mari Manzanares and Roca Rey will fight a bulls from Juan Pedro Domecq.

The next appointment is on August 6, with a poster of maximum expectation composed by Morante de La Puebla, whose art is always desired… Repeats Manzanares that comes from chaining successes in last fairs, and Ginés Marín , surprise and winner of Madrid and Pamplona. The bulls will be from Núñez del Cuvillo. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the taurine season of El Puerto.

The following weekend there will be bullfights on Saturday and Sunday. On August the 12th will be fought bulls of La Palmosilla for the bullfighters Finito de Córdoba, Lopez Simón and José Garrido; and on August 13 comes the expected hand to hand.

Morante de La Puebla and El Juli will be measured against three bulls of Núñez del Cuvillo and three others by Daniel Ruiz. An afternoon of emotions, with two big ones, of which it is better to be a witness.

Have a nice and taurine week!
