Logroño Bullfighting Fair 2024. La Rioja, Spain
The word “bouquet” comes from French and means aroma. When wine experts talk about bouquet, they actually refer to the essence that the wine has developed during the aging process, whether in barrel or bottle.
Logroño is a land of wines, specifically Rioja D.O., and therefore a land with a refined palate and sensitivity. It’s a place where you can savor both a fine wine and a masterful bullfight. During the upcoming Feria de San Mateo, held from September 21st to 24th, you’ll have ample opportunity to do both at La Ribera bullring. The fair includes four bullfighting events: three bullfights and one rejoneo (bullfighting on horseback), offering plenty of reasons to enjoy the art of bullfighting.
The festivities kick off on Saturday, September 21st, with a bullfight featuring Zalduendo bulls for Miguel Ángel Perera, Daniel Luque, and Borja Jiménez—three matadors who have made a strong impression this year, starting with Seville’s Feria de Abril and continuing their success throughout the season. In Logroño, they aim to extend their winning streak.
The next day, Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza bids farewell to Logroño, sharing the ring with his son Guillermo in a highly emotional event where the present and future of horseback bullfighting meet. Facing them will be six bulls from Pallarés, a Santa Coloma lineage that adds a “torista” touch to the occasion.
On Monday, September 23rd, it’s the turn of Morante de la Puebla, Diego Urdiales, and Alejandro Talavante, who will fight bulls from Juan Pedro Domecq. This trio of top-tier matadors includes Diego Urdiales, the most important bullfighter to come from this region, who is also celebrating his 25th anniversary as a matador this year.
To close the fair, a contrasting yet incredibly attractive lineup awaits: Against the always intriguing Fuente Ymbro bulls, two matadors who embody the sentiment of this art—Juan Ortega and Pablo Aguado—will share the bill with Andrés Roca Rey, the current top figure in bullfighting. Despite common stereotypes, Roca Rey has often proven that he can fight as well as the best. Who among the three will leave the most lasting impression, much like the renowned wines of this land, with their depth and tradition? The answer will come on Tuesday, September 24th, at La Ribera.
