St. George's Fair, Zaragoza 2024
The San Jorge Fair in Zaragoza has always been the “poor sister” of the bullfighting cycle that has always represented the Aragonese capital: El Pilar. In October, the core of the programming and also the most traditional and thunderous posters are concentrated, while April is an appetizer, a way to wake up and open your mouth for what will come six months later.
But this 2024 something seems to have changed on the banks of the Ebro. The company Zaragoza Toros has presented a very interesting poster, in which, after many years, the figures return to the La Misericordia bullring at this time of the calendar. Two bullfights and a novillada in which figures of the stature of Roca Rey, Talavante or El Cid and bullfighters of maximum current affairs such as Juan Ortega or Borja Jiménez, as well as promises of the land such as Cristiano Torres or Fran Fernando.
Precisely the latter are in charge of opening the programming, on Saturday, April 20. Cristiano Torres leads the local novillada after his successes last year in places like Pamplona, Arnedo and the Pignatelli bullring itself, and fights alongside Tristán Barroso, a Frenchman trained at the Badajoz School who presents an enviable service record in his still incipient career, and the Zaragozan Fran Fernando, the sensation of the El Pilar Fair 2022, who comes to debut with picadors. The cattle wear the iron of Jiménez Pasquau, a bullfighting farm of proven lineage that is returning to fight with successful regularity.
On Sunday 21, the star poster of the programming is announced. Andrés Roca Rey, the leading figure in current bullfighting, returns to Zaragoza after several years of absence. The Peruvian star has decided to finish his last seasons before the El Pilar Fair and for this reason he does not appear in the Aragonese capital since 2017. A great incentive for the Maño fan, eager to see the Lima bullfighter again.
Along with Roca Rey will perform that day Alejandro Talavante, one of the most beloved bullfighters in La Misericordia, where he has had unforgettable performances, such as the one in 2011 to the bull “Esparraguero” from Cuvillo. The poster is completed by Juan Ortega, a bullfighter of maximum current affairs and one of the main attractions of the artist-style bullfighting. The bulls belong to the Benjumea and Daniel Ruiz farms.
The fair and programming closes another very interesting bullfight, headed by a bullfighting farm with a great poster in this fiefdom, that of Ana Romero, of Santa Coloma origin. Manuel Jesús El Cid, who also returns to Zaragoza, where he retired from bullfighting in 2019, will be in charge of fighting it. Along with the Salteras, two young people with many things to say, Borja Jiménez, one of the revelations of the last course, and the French Clemente, surely the bullfighter with the most atmosphere in the neighboring country today.
