Villena: The Return

Perhaps, dear aficionado, the whirlwind of summer events has made you overlook the significance of 7th September in Villena. Perhaps you’re unaware of the recent history or the fact that it hosts the most comfortable bullring in Spain. And finally, you might not know that after five years, bullfighting returns there in the best possible way. This is no ordinary return: This is "The Return"
Plaza de toros de Villena, Alicante

Centenary of the Villena Bullring (Alicante)

Villena can proudly boast one of the most modern bullrings in Spain, a Covered and Multifunctional Plaza. However, until now, it has been somewhat of a “ghost” arena. Following a thorough renovation that faithfully respected the structure of the building inaugurated in 1924 (a century ago), political interference from Los Verdes significantly limited its use, with barely any events held over the past ten years.

However, everything has changed in 2024. Now free from bureaucratic hurdles, this splendid bullring in Alicante is preparing to return to action—and it’s doing so in the best possible way, with an exceptional lineup befitting the occasion.

The chosen date is 7th September, a day that will henceforth be significant as it marks a dual celebration: the return of bullfighting and the centenary of the building, which is an architectural gem on the outside and a spectacular multifunctional centre on the inside. The venue’s majestic glass roof, spacious corridors, and comfortable seating make it (as advertised) the most comfortable bullring in Spain.

For this momentous occasion, it was inevitable that José María Manzanares, a local hero and the most important bullfighter from Alicante in the last forty years, would be featured. The new management company, Promociones Martí y Boira, had no doubts about who should lead the lineup for the ‘Moros y Cristianos’ festivities.

It was also the perfect occasion for Andrés Roca Rey to make his debut in Villena, a ring that has always hosted top figures. The Peruvian, currently the leading figure in bullfighting, will also make his mark on 7th September.

No significant event is complete without a landmark moment, and this return is no exception: Alfredo Bernabéu, a local novillero, will take his alternative in Villena, receiving the doctorate in bullfighting from his fellow countryman, Manzanares. This will also be the first time that José Mari will make a bullfighter from Alicante a matador.

The selected cattle ranch not only befits the occasion but enhances it. Victoriano del Río Cortés is considered the most acclaimed breeding estate of the last 15 years in prestigious bullrings. Its successes in Madrid, among others, and the many Puertas Grandes won with its bulls, make it the ideal choice for an event that aims to be a new chapter in the fruitful relationship between Villena and bullfighting.
