Plasencia: The Top Figures in the Jerte Valley

Plasencia has a lot to see and tell. In the historical field, in the monumental, but also in the bullfighting. The company Ceber Tauro has scheduled a top-notch weekend in mid-June where the top figures, on foot and on horseback, appear in the “Coso de Las Golondrinas” to give even more luster to a city that exudes art and charm on all four sides.

City of Plasencia, Cáceres

Located at the gateway to the Jerte Valley, the city of Plasencia is the most populated in the north of Extremadura. It has a prolific and fertile history and heritage, in line with its vast history, as it was founded by King Alfonso VIII of Castile in 1186. From its monumental complex, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1958, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Carvajal-Girón Palace and the Mirabel Palace stand out.

But Plasencia also boasts a beautiful bullring, which dates from 1882 and has a capacity for 6780 spectators. The so-called “Las Golondrinas” bullring, owned by the municipality, opens its doors every year in mid-June, coinciding with the city’s festivities, and the first Tuesday in August, known as Major Tuesday. The festivities are currently organized by the company Ceber Tauro.

For the current season, the aforementioned company, led by the Extremaduran bullfighter Alberto Manuel, has organized two events of maximum interest for the 15th and 16th of June: a bullfight with the main figures of bullfighting and a rejoneo (bullfighting on horseback) event, a show that has many followers in the area, and which also features the most outstanding representatives of this art.

On Saturday the 15th, none other than José Antonio Morante de la Puebla and Andrés Roca Rey are announced, surely the two bullfighters who, each in their own way, bring the most people to the square. The combination is completed by Ginés Marín, one of the most interesting bullfighters of the so-called new generation, who will also be the regional bet of the combination, as although he is originally from Jerez de la Frontera, he has been raised in Extremaduran lands since his earliest childhood.

The next day, Sunday the 16th, the line-up is headed by the master Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza, the maximum exponent of this art, who is also in the process of saying goodbye to the bullrings (he will say goodbye to them at the end of the season). Accompanying the Estella centaur in the paseíllo will be Leonardo Hernández, a young rejoneador but with extensive experience, who has an enviable curriculum, with successes in Madrid and Pamplona among other squares, and is also based in the Cáceres countryside, and the Frenchwoman Léa Vicens, who also occupies the top positions of the ranking every year.

The bulls to be fought also have all guarantees, as those on foot belong to the herd of Núñez del Cuvillo, one of the most prestigious and awarded of the last decades, while for bullfighting on horseback a bullfight of Romão Tenorio is announced, a brand of Murube origin, which both in Spain and in its country, Portugal, fights with successful regularity.

The posters are unbeatable, the city is well worth a visit, especially on such significant dates as the city’s festivities. To lose oneself for a few days and soak up culture and bulls, this June in Plasencia, as Sabina would say, there are plenty of reasons.
