Bullfighting Fair of Palencia: the perfect balance
Palencia’s fair has become the fastest-growing in Castilla y León in recent years. The programme no longer relies on just one or two star-studded afternoons, but instead, offers a well-rounded and solid lineup with attractions every day.
The Feria de San Antolín provides space not only for established stars but also for up-and-coming talent and the new generation of bullfighters. The line-up includes artistic matadors, stylists, and those who embody bravery and strength as their essence. All of this takes place in a comfortable, functional bullring with spacious seats, wide aisles, and modern access points, perfectly suited to hosting a fair of this calibre.
On Thursday, August 29, during the first event of the cycle, the most impressive novice of the current season will take the alternative. Following his triumphant shoulder-high exit at San Isidro, Roberto Martín Jarocho will receive his doctorate in Palencia from Cayetano, with Daniel Luque as a witness, fighting bulls from the Montalvo ranch.
The following day (Friday, August 30), Castella and Perera, two relentless competitors, will face each other in a bullfight featuring bulls from Algarra. The young Fernando Adrián, who made his debut at the fair last year as a substitute and became the fair’s overall winner, including an indulto (pardon), completes the lineup.
Saturday, August 31, is the day for artistic bullfighters. Morante de la Puebla, Alejandro Talavante, and Juan Ortega will come together in the “Coso de los Campos Góticos,” aiming to draw inspiration from the “Zalduendo” bulls of José Vázquez, one of the finest herds in the entire brave bull cattle.
September in Palencia begins with toreo a caballo (bullfighting on horseback). A rejoneo event will bring together three leading figures of this art: Sergio Galán, Diego Ventura, and Léa Vicens, who will take on bulls from the Portuguese Guiomar Cortés de Moura ranch, of Murube lineage.
To conclude, on Monday, September 2, there will be a Goyesque bullfight, outside the season ticket, to pay tribute to local matador Pedro Giraldo, who passed away a few months ago. A set of bulls from Núñez del Cuvillo is planned, to be fought by José María Manzanares, Roca Rey, and Ginés Marín—a fitting finale for a varied and well-balanced programme that has already seen a strong response at the box office. There are certainly plenty of reasons to attend.
