The Andalusian capital celebrates the fair in honor of its patroness, the Virgin of the Sea, the second half of August
It takes less than a week for Almería to explode with the traditional lighting of the portal of the Fairground and start the Fair of the Virgin of the Sea 2019, which will last from August 16 to 24. The Virgin of the Sea is the patroness of the city since the beginning of the 19th century, a date that coincides with the origin of the fair. Its festivity takes place on the Saturday before the last Sunday of August so the celebrations were established on those dates.
At the beginning, the Fair took place in the historic center and, as usual, it had the character of an agricultural and especially livestock exhibition, as well as craft stalls. Gradually it was growing, increasing trade and leisure activities and changing the location.
Midday Fair and Fairground
The Midday Fair is the heiress of that initial fair in the center and is composed of various open air bars and ‘ambigú’ places where you can enjoy gastronomy and wine in a very hospitable atmosphere and surrounded by sevillanas and traditional costumes. After lunch the party continues in the area of Las Cuatro Calles.
At night it moves to the Fairground of Vega de Acá, located next to the Stadium of the Mediterranean Games. Crowds of booths, attractions and stalls ensure fun until dawn.
Multitude of acts and activities
Among the large amount of leisure and culture offer these days, the Flamenco Festival, the Popular Pottery Fair, the swimming port crossing, the Petanque Championship or the fireworks castles stand out; but also the concerts, the Folk Festival of the Iberian and Mediterranean Peoples, equestrian activities and the Bullfights.
The Bullfighting Fair of Almería
The Almería Bullring is famous for the amount of shawls from Manila that adorn the rows during bullfighting, and also for celebrating the traditional afternoon snack after the third bull.
This year there will be four celebrations from August 17 to 20, three bullfights and one with horses. All have incentives to not miss an afternoon: the winners of San Isidro Antonio Ferrera and David de Miranda, youth with Luis David or Ginés Marín that replaces Roca Rey. A very complete season-ticket!
Happy week, bullfighting lovers!
