Bullfighting poster Mérida (Babajoz), bullfighting regains its splendor

Merida is a cultural reference. For its rich heritage and its vestiges of Roman times. But, the businessman and rancher José Luis Pereda also intends to be a bullfighting icon in Extremadura. And with posters like the one on April 27th, the ancient Emérita Augusta is also going to be a bullfighting icon. Word.

Bullfighting Mérida recovers its splendor

The popular saying goes that the one who can turn problems into opportunities has a greater chance of success. The businessman and cattle rancher José Luis Pereda has taken the aphorism to heart. Manager of one of the most beautiful arenas in Spain, that of Mérida, he has decided to recover it for bullfighting and make it a reference at the beginning of this season.

Indeed, the San Albín bullring, as it is also known, hosted its bullfighting festivities during the first days of September, a time when the heat still presses firmly in this area, where many of its inhabitants were still enjoying their summer holidays when the festivities took place. This trend meant that the stands did not fully settle and that, therefore, the quality of the posters suffered.

That’s why Pereda has decided to change the bullfighting dates in the capital of the Extremadura community, and in passing, restore its splendor to its beautiful bullring. The chosen date, Saturday, April 27, is not chosen at random, as it is embedded between the April Fair in Seville (by then already concluded) and that of San Isidro in Madrid (which at that time will not have started yet). In this way, Extremaduran fans can stay at home, and the Andalusians and Castilians “pilgrimage” to the ancient emerita augusta.

Because, the poster, is worth it: José Antonio Morante de la Puebla, the most unique artist of the 21st century, the Peruvian, Andrés Roca Rey, the leading figure in current bullfighting, and Alejandro Talavante, who in addition to being a top-tier bullfighter, is the Extremaduran representation of a combination of many carats. The bulls, moreover, belong to a top-level ranch like the Salamanca one of El Pilar, owned by Moisés Fraile Martín.

If we add to that, a price policy suitable for all budgets, and the charm of a city that has been declared a World Heritage Site since 1993, thanks to a rich archaeological heritage, mainly from the Roman era, such as the aqueduct of miracles, the bridge over the Guadiana river or its wonderful Roman theater, the offer is more than suggestive to get lost in its streets the last weekend of April.

Because bullfighting is not only in the fairs and in the “Grand Slam” squares. And a neo-Mudejar bullring like the one located on the Cerro de San Albín, charming, secluded, more than a century old (dating from 1914) and of second administrative category due to its characteristics and dimensions, is the ideal scenario for this spring, and with the invaluable collaboration of the “aldeanuevas” of El Pilar, Morante, Talavante and Roca Rey attract the muses the last Saturday of April.
