Arenas de San Pedro Does It Again: A Star-Studded Lineup and Compelling Reasons to Attend

The bullfighting season kicks off with excitement and promise. The first posters are an invitation to shake off the winter blues and return to the comfort zone that, for aficionados, is none other than the stone tiers of the bullring. In April, Arenas de San Pedro announces a must-see event for true enthusiasts and a highly recommended stop for occasional spectators. Discover more.

The company Tauroemoción has breathed new life into the bullring of Arenas de San Pedro. Since their arrival in 2021, this charming arena in Ávila—already a landmark in the region—has hosted renowned figures such as Morante, Roca Rey, Emilio de Justo, Talavante, Juan Ortega, Daniel Luque, El Fandi, Cayetano, and even the Spanish debut of Marco Pérez as a novice with picadors.

Alberto García, the company’s director, has always sought to create meaningful lineups, ensuring each event has its own identity and purpose, rather than simply assembling three big names on a poster. This commitment has been especially evident in this arena nestled in the Sierra de Gredos mountains.

To kick off the 2025 season, Tauroemoción has organised a remarkable event: the return of César Jiménez to the bullring. A matador closely tied to this region, Jiménez enjoyed immense popularity during the first decade of this century, even leading the rankings in 2003 and 2004.

The world’s most prestigious bullrings witnessed his triumphs. His performances at Las Ventas (Madrid) are legendary, with three grand exits as a matador and one as a novice after single-handedly fighting six young bulls. He also achieved great success at La Maestranza (Seville), particularly with a bull from Torrestrella in 2006, and enjoyed a celebrated career in the Americas, including a memorable performance in Quito. There, he pardoned a bull amidst a torrential downpour that turned the Ecuadorian capital’s arena into a pool, with water levels rising past the ankles of the performers.

After several years of retirement, César Jiménez has been sharing his expertise as a bullfighting commentator on Castilla La Mancha Media (CMM). Known for his measured yet incisive commentary, he complements José Miguel Martín de Blas, forming what many consider the best broadcasting duo in modern bullfighting coverage.

However, a matador never ceases to be one. In 2025, the bullfighter from Fuenlabrada will once again don his traje de luces (suit of lights) in this arena filled with memories. He will be joined by Alejandro Talavante and Tomás Rufo, two of the most acclaimed bullfighters in recent years—the former a leading figure of his generation, the latter a rising star from Toledo. Both will showcase their skills in a season where they are sure to take centre stage.

The bulls, as expected, will bear the renowned Garcigrande brand, owned by Justo Hernández, a name synonymous with quality and a guarantee for an unforgettable spectacle.

The date—Sunday, April 13 (Palm Sunday)—is the perfect excuse for travellers to visit this picturesque town, the capital of the Valle del Tiétar. Beyond the bullring, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Sierra de Gredos and explore the town’s rich heritage, including the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the medieval Aquelcabos Bridge, and its Gothic castle, declared a national monument in 1931. Can you think of a better plan to kick off the bullfighting season?
