Móstoles 15 June: Morante, Rufo and Chicharro

Following his historic Puerta Grande (exiting through the main gate, a sign of a great triumph) at Las Ventas during the Charity Bullfight, José Antonio Morante de la Puebla returns to the Community of Madrid just one week later. This will be on Sunday, 15th June, at the Móstoles bullring. Interest and anticipation for this event have skyrocketed since the genius from La Puebla del Río’s victory in the capital’s bullring.

Morante is widely considered the most unique artist of the 21st century in the bullfighting world. He’s a melting pot of different styles of bullfighting, and his interpretation makes the cliché of the “artist bullfighter” seem almost trivial. Morante is far more than that. He embodies grace and depth, simplicity and naturalness, and courage. It takes immense composure to bullfight with such slowness, abandonment, and languidness as he interprets La Tauromaquia.

His successes in Seville, Jerez, Aranjuez, and now Las Ventas have greatly increased the demand to see him. A pilgrimage to wherever he performs this summer is now essential. And the first stop is that rather distinctive, flying saucer-like bullring, highly visible from the Extremadura motorway: the Móstoles bullring.

There, the bullfighter from La Puebla (a common nickname for Morante) will share the billing with two promising young bullfighters: Tomás Rufo, a leader of his generation with a Puerta Grande in Madrid and a couple of Puertas del Príncipe (similar to a Puerta Grande, but specific to the Maestranza in Seville) to his name; and Alejandro Chicharro, who recently took his alternativa (the ceremony where a bullfighter becomes a fully-fledged matador). Chicharro was the standout novillero (junior bullfighter) of last season, also earning a triumphant exit on shoulders from Las Ventas.

The bulls are from the El Vellosino ranch, a breeding farm from Salamanca known for its Aldeanueva bloodline, distinguished by the class and quality of the bulls they present. Without a doubt, their presence guarantees that the bullfighting on show next Sunday in this southern Madrid bullring will be exceptional.

In addition to the ample car park next to the arena, Madrid’s metro network has a stop almost right at the bullring’s entrance. Metro line 12 (Metrosur) and the C-5 commuter train line connect central Madrid to this multi-purpose arena in just under half an hour. With a capacity for 5,000 spectators, it hosts various artistic activities and entertainment shows alongside bullfights.

Everything is ready for Sunday. Morante continues his journey, and on the 15th, he’s stopping in Móstoles. The genius is threatening to pull off another sensation. You’ve been warned. If you miss it, it’ll be your own fault!
