Ciudad Real reopens its bullring with a top-notch lineup

It has been five years without bulls. Since the Feria de la Virgen Del Prado in 2019, the Manchego bullring has remained firmly closed. First, due to the pandemic and then, as a result of a deep rehabilitation of one of the few historic buildings in the capital. But after a long five years, the bullring, built and inaugurated in 1843, proudly boasts its nearly two centuries of history.

The complex rehabilitation works have cost the City Council of Ciudad Real an investment of 2.2 million euros and have lasted a year and a half. The reform has essentially consisted of improving the accessibility and safety of the building, in addition to reinforcing the roofs and walls of the square. An elevator for people with reduced mobility has been installed, a new vomitory has been created, and the existing ones have been widened.

These tasks have resulted in a significant reduction in seats, leaving the capacity at around 6,000 spectators, but the bullring is now gleaming for its reopening on April 28th. The company Tauroemoción, with Alberto García at the helm, has been in charge of creating the lineup that marks the return to life of the Ciudad Real bullring, a top-level combination, as it could not be otherwise, for the return to activity of the province’s leading bullfighting venue.

Alongside José Antonio Morante de la Puebla and Andrés Roca Rey, icons, each in their own way, of the two most common and recognizable facets of bullfighting, Emilio de Justo is billed, winner last year in Madrid and Seville, among many other squares, who has recovered from a serious cervical injury suffered in the 2022 season and who is reaping the rewards of a career based on sacrifice and authenticity in recent exercises.

The cattle ranch selected for the occasion also has pedigree, and is in line with the event. It is the Sevillian herd of Luis Algarra, which comes directly from Juan Pedro Domecq, and is an emblem both in its shapes and in its typology, and therefore, a guarantee in terms of its behavior. The bulls that graze on the La Capitana estate will be the first to tread the sand of this bullring again, which has a diameter of 53 meters, where the main figures of all times have performed.

Everything is ready for the big day, the presentation of a completely renovated venue, with the idea of turning it into a prepared space in which to develop socio-cultural activities for the city, which complement the bullfighting offer, which will logically continue next August at the Feria de la Virgen Del Prado. Ciudad Real is back in the game. Bullfighting recovers a square. And it does so in style. We are in luck.
