Illescas Review – March 8, 2026

Diego Ventura sparks a sensation in Illescas

The Illescas Bullring hosted an electrifying afternoon to open the 2026 Feria del Milagro, with a thrilling rejoneo (bullfighting on horseback) contest that turned into a memorable spectacle. The line-up featured Rui Fernandes, Andy Cartagena and Diego Ventura, and the event ended with all three horsemen leaving the arena carried on the shoulders of the crowd.

The undisputed star of the afternoon was Diego Ventura, who delivered a truly outstanding performance. The Sevillian rejoneador produced two powerful and highly expressive displays that captivated the audience from the outset.

Showing superb control of the arena, great skill at close quarters with the bull and a strong connection with the crowd, Ventura was awarded two ears and the tail from each of his bulls, totalling four ears and two tails in one of the most remarkable performances seen in Illescas in recent years.

His triumph crowned a vibrant afternoon that kept spectators engaged from the very first bull.

Rui Fernandes opens the door to victory

Portuguese rejoneador Rui Fernandes opened the afternoon with a composed and well-measured performance. Facing the first bull of the day, he displayed elegance and experience, quickly finding the rhythm of the contest and earning the first trophy of the afternoon.

With his second bull, Fernandes maintained the same solid level, delivering a serious and effective performance that was also rewarded with an ear, securing his place in the collective triumph of the day.

Andy Cartagena combines effectiveness and spectacle

Andy Cartagena also enjoyed a highly successful afternoon. The Alicante-born rider showcased his characteristic style, combining showmanship and technical precision.

His confident execution in the final phase of the performance secured two ears from each of his bulls, confirming another strong display and ensuring his exit on shoulders alongside his fellow rejoneadores.

Strong performance from the Capea and Carmen Lorenzo bulls

The bulls provided by the El Capea and Carmen Lorenzo ranches performed well overall and played a key role in the success of the event.

The standout of the afternoon was the sixth bull, which was awarded a lap of honour (vuelta al ruedo) for its exceptional bravery and quality, bringing the event to a fitting conclusion.

The result was a thoroughly entertaining afternoon of rejoneo, filled with excitement, spectacle and a passionate crowd who enjoyed every moment of the opening event of Illescas’ traditional fair.
