The Annual Miracle of Castile: Burgos Awakens Under the Sun of the Sampedros

With the arrival of summer, Burgos shakes off its long slumber to prove that tradition is not merely an echo of the past, but a vibrant present that defies the calendar itself. Dare to discover the city and its famous feria — you will not be disappointed.

Morante, Roca Rey and the San Pedro & San Pablo celebrations

As June slowly reaches its final days, the Castilian cold finally surrenders to a torrent of sunshine, fireworks and passion. The city of El Cid casts aside its usual medieval sobriety and dresses itself in the colours of celebration. It is a complete transformation, where the Gothic echo of the city gives way to the rhythm of the streets and the mystery of the bullring sand. Burgos does not simply celebrate its patron saints; it reinvents itself during a week in which time itself seems to stand still, allowing life to unfold with overwhelming intensity.

The epicentre of this almost mystical communion lies within the Coliseum, an arena which once again becomes the temple where the mature tradition and avant-garde spirit of modern bullfighting come together. The San Pedro and San Pablo Bullfighting Fair, taking place from 28 June to 2 July, unfolds like a poem written with sand, silk and the strength of the Spanish countryside. The line-ups for this year’s edition, carefully designed by Tauroemoción, have already sparked enormous excitement among fans.

Anticipation can be felt in every conversation beside the River Arlanzón. People speak of the baroque genius of Morante de la Puebla, whose inspired and unpredictable style seeks to stop time beneath the skies of Burgos; of the chilling composure of Andrés Roca Rey, the modern phenomenon capable of filling the Coliseum through the sheer magnetism of his fearless bullfighting; and of the natural purity of Emilio de Justo, a matador whose timeless style and deep natural passes continue to captivate aficionados.

Alongside these stars, the feria also celebrates the strength of local identity, elevating two names from the region who have earned the respect of the bullfighting world through talent and determination. Experience and maturity are represented by Jesús Martínez “Morenito de Aranda”, a matador of refined classical style and unmistakable Castilian character. On 1 July he takes on the major challenge of appearing alongside Roca Rey and Tomás Rufo in one of the feria’s headline events, facing bulls from Carlos Charro.

The younger generation is embodied by Roberto Martín “Jarocho”, the great hope of Burgos bullfighting. Having recently generated huge excitement among fans, his inclusion in the feria is not merely symbolic, but a true statement of intent. On 30 June, the young matador will experience one of the defining moments of the feria as he shares the ring with Morante de la Puebla and Emilio de Justo, facing bulls from Juan Pedro Domecq. Two local bullfighters prepared to risk everything, supported by their own people, against the greatest names in modern bullfighting.

The structure of the feria has been carefully designed to maintain interest from beginning to end, offering something for every type of spectator. The opening highlight on 29 June features bulls from Ave María and brings together the established artistry of Sebastián Castella, alongside Borja Jiménez — one of the strongest names in today’s rankings — and the extremely young Marco Pérez, the Salamanca prodigy whose performances are attracting extraordinary attention wherever he appears.

For lovers of mounted bullfighting, the midway point of the feria on 28 June offers a true celebration of equestrian art with bulls from Benítez Cubero. This highly anticipated rejoneo event will feature the classic elegance of Sergio Galán, the Portuguese mastery of João Ribeiro Telles and the vibrant style of Lea Vicens, promising an unforgettable afternoon on horseback.

Even the final corrida on 2 July carries a strong sense of tradition and popular appeal, with a trio of specialist banderilleros guaranteeing physical commitment and direct connection with the crowd against the serious bulls of Luis Algarra.

Yet the bullfighting ritual is only one half of the heartbeat that defines these celebrations. Once spectators leave the arena, the fiesta spills into the streets in a huge choreography of shared joy. Everything explodes into life in the Plaza Mayor when the opening speech and the traditional wine-skin launch cut through the air, instantly breaking everyday routine.

The streets then become a living stage inhabited by the famous Gigantones and Gigantillos, iconic giant figures that preserve local folklore while dancing majestically among children and adults to the nostalgic sound of traditional dulzaina music. Castilian solemnity reaches its greatest visual expression during the Floral Offering, when a multicoloured blanket of flowers covers the feet of Santa María la Mayor in front of Burgos Cathedral, blending devotion and artistic beauty beneath one of Spain’s most spectacular Gothic façades.

The daytime atmosphere unquestionably belongs to the peñas. Dressed in their colourful traditional overshirts, they break every trace of formality accompanied by the travelling sound of brass bands and charangas. The air of the historic centre fills with the unmistakable aroma of Burgos black pudding slowly cooked in the food stalls — the perfect preparation for the long days and nights ahead.

As the sun disappears behind the cathedral spires, the sky lights up with spectacular fireworks displays, while the celebrations continue late into the night across the city’s many live music stages.

Like a beautiful rural epilogue, the festivities come to an end with the traditional Día de las Peñas in the pine forests of Fuentes Blancas. There, during the Concurso del Buen Yantar, the smoke from the grills and the spirit of friendship renew the annual bond between the people of Burgos and their land.

Experiencing the Sampedros ultimately means reconnecting with authenticity itself — a journey where the magnetism of the bullring and the warmth of the streets leave an unforgettable mark on the soul of anyone brave enough to discover it.
