Huelva During Colombinas: The Best-Kept Secret of the Bullfighting Summer
Forget the usual summer destinations. Hidden Huelva comes alive during the Colombinas Fair 2026, where the legendary return of Miura combines with the appeal of Spain’s greatest matadors and the charm of one of Andalusia’s most authentic cities.
The Colombinas Bullfighting Fair 2026 has established itself as one of the highlights of the Andalusian summer, thanks to an outstanding season ticket programme organised by promoter José Luis Pereda. Running from 29 July to 3 August, this year’s fair is marked by the historic return of the Miura breeding ranch after fifty years away from Huelva, as well as two appearances by local hero David de Miranda.
For those who have yet to discover La Merced Bullring or the attractions of the city of Huelva, this is the perfect opportunity to combine world-class bullfighting with an unforgettable holiday. The programme offers an excellent balance between the most demanding fighting bull bloodlines, the biggest stars of modern bullfighting and the promotion of promising young talent.
The return of the legendary Miura bulls on Friday 31 July, fifty years after their last appearance in Huelva, is one of the defining moments of the fair. Bullfighting specialists David Fandila “El Fandi“ and Manuel Escribano will join local matador Alejandro Conquero in what promises to be one of the most exciting afternoons of the festival.
The fair reaches another high point on Saturday 1 August with bulls from Juan Pedro Domecq. The bill features the consistency of Miguel Ángel Perera, the spectacular talent of Andrés Roca Rey, and local favourite David de Miranda, who celebrates the tenth anniversary of his alternativa (the ceremony in which a bullfighter becomes a fully qualified matador).
The organisers have also secured the appearance of Morante de la Puebla on Monday 3 August, Huelva’s main festive day. He will share the paseíllo with Daniel Luque and, once again, David de Miranda, facing bulls from several prestigious breeding ranches selected to encourage artistic and memorable performances.
A Fair for Every Bullfighting Fan
On Sunday 2 August, the fair will host an exciting rejones event (bullfighting on horseback), led by the sport’s leading rider, Diego Ventura, alongside Portuguese horseman Duarte Fernandes, promising an afternoon of outstanding horsemanship.
The fair opens on 29 and 30 July with Huelva es Torera, a competition designed to support the next generation of bullfighters, followed by a novillada featuring some of the region’s most promising young talents, including Carlos Tirado, Guillermo Luna and one of the breakout stars of the 2026 season, Julio Norte.
Discover La Merced Bullring
For visitors coming to Huelva for the first time, La Merced Bullring is a real hidden gem.
Originally inaugurated in 1902, this beautiful bullring is renowned for its distinctive regional architecture and its intimate atmosphere. With a capacity of around 7,000 spectators, it offers a much closer experience than many of Spain’s larger arenas.
From almost every seat, spectators can appreciate every detail of the performance. The sound of the cape cutting through the air, the conversations between the bullfighters and their teams, and even the breathing of the bull create an atmosphere that is both intense and unforgettable.
Huelva’s crowd is known for its warm Andalusian spirit and deep appreciation of artistic bullfighting. They reward genuine quality with heartfelt applause while avoiding easy enthusiasm, making every ovation feel truly earned.
As the sun sets over the arena and the Atlantic breeze drifts inland from the nearby estuary, watching a bullfight at La Merced becomes one of the most memorable experiences of the Spanish summer.
Experience Huelva Beyond the Bullring
Visiting Huelva during the Colombinas Festival—which commemorates the departure of Christopher Columbus’s ships on their voyage to the Americas—is much more than a bullfighting trip. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of Andalusia’s most authentic and welcoming cities, far from the crowds of Spain’s more tourist-heavy destinations.
Legendary Gastronomy <h3>
No day at the bullring in Huelva is complete without enjoying the city’s outstanding cuisine. Huelva is the home of the world-famous Jabugo Ham (D.O.P. Jabugo) and the celebrated White Prawns of Huelva, two of Spain’s finest gastronomic treasures. These local specialities can be enjoyed in the lively bars and restaurants of the city centre or at the many food stalls and gastronomic events held throughout the Colombinas celebrations.
Sunshine and Endless Beaches <h3>
Just a few minutes from the city centre lie kilometres of unspoilt golden sandy beaches, including Punta Umbría and Mazagón. The perfect summer itinerary is easy to imagine: spend the morning relaxing by the Atlantic Ocean before enjoying an unforgettable afternoon of world-class bullfighting at La Merced.
The Colombinas Fairground <h3>
As night falls, the celebrations move to the Colombinas Fairground, located beside the estuary. This spacious and welcoming venue comes alive with traditional casetas (festival marquees), where locals and visitors gather to enjoy Andalusian wine, live flamenco music, dancing and a vibrant festive atmosphere beneath spectacular illuminations.
It is one of the best places to experience the warmth, hospitality and joyful spirit that make Huelva such a special destination during the summer festival.
