Toledo: Thyme, Incense and Bullfighting
Toledo brings its vibrant Semana Grande celebrations to a spectacular close with an outstanding bullfight combining artistry, elegance and strong local roots. An unmissable event where top-class bullfighting meets the unique charm of the beautifully decorated Imperial City.
Toledo is already filled with the scent of thyme and incense as its Semana Grande celebrations unfold, bringing with them one of the most eagerly awaited events in the bullfighting calendar: the traditional Corpus Christi bullfight. For 2026, the management of the Imperial City’s bullring has moved the event to Sunday 7 June and has assembled a truly outstanding line-up combining artistry, mastery and local pride.
The event will feature three major names guaranteed to fill the stands. Opening the afternoon is Morante de la Puebla. The genius from La Puebla del Río returns to Toledo to grace the occasion with his unmistakable style and old-world bullfighting artistry, perfectly suited to the solemn atmosphere of Corpus Christi. His memorable Seville April Fair campaign — including the injury setback — together with his recent comeback in Jerez, has only heightened anticipation to see him once again in the ring.
José María Manzanares: elegance personified. The Alicante-born matador, one of Toledo’s crowd favourites, will bring his flawless aesthetics and commanding presence against the Zalduendo bulls. It was in this very bullring, twenty years ago, that he delivered one of the most significant performances of that stage of his career, facing a bull from El Ventorrillo alongside Enrique Ponce and Alejandro Talavante.
Álvaro Lorenzo: the local representative and previous triumphalist of this event. The Toledo-born matador, already familiar with leaving the arena on supporters’ shoulders on this special date, completes a highly attractive bill that perfectly balances experience and youth. This year also marks the tenth anniversary of his alternativa, an important milestone he celebrated in this same bullring just a few months ago by fighting six bulls in a brilliant and successful solo performance.
For this occasion, a prestigious batch of Zalduendo bulls has been selected. Bulls from this renowned breeder are celebrated for their nobility and quality, ideal characteristics for the three matadors to showcase their finest bullfighting in an arena of Toledo’s stature.
Visiting the Imperial City on Corpus Sunday offers the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a celebration that continues to pulse with life. Although the main religious ceremonies take place on Thursday, the streets of the historic centre retain that unique and solemn decoration seen only once a year. An early morning stroll beneath the traditional awnings still covering the procession route, carpeted with rosemary and thyme, allows visitors to admire the richly decorated balconies, the Flemish tapestries displayed inside the Cathedral and the magnificent Toledo courtyards exceptionally opened to the public during these festivities.
At lunchtime, Toledo’s gastronomy becomes the perfect prelude before the bullfight. Restaurants around Zocodover Square, the narrow streets near the Cathedral and the Convent district offer special menus featuring local game dishes such as Toledo-style partridge, carcamusas stew and roast lamb, all accompanied by the city’s most iconic sweet speciality: Toledo marzipan in its many traditional artisan varieties. Booking ahead becomes essential on a day when restaurants and terraces are almost completely full.
And as evening falls and the bullfight comes to an end, the Mirador del Valle viewpoint becomes an essential stop to admire the illuminated silhouette of the Alcázar and Cathedral rising above the River Tagus — the perfect conclusion to a day filled with art, history and tradition, confirming Corpus Sunday as one of the most complete and attractive occasions to experience Toledo at its very best.
