Bullfighting fair in La Línea de la Concepción
Guarded by the Rock of Gibraltar, in that southern “Corner” where surfing, bull-breeding, and bullfighting are lived in equal measure, the town of La Línea de la Concepción presents itself to the world. Rich in cultural heritage, the town boasts impressive landmarks such as the 18th-century forts of San Carlos, Santa Bárbara and San Felipe, as well as the old Military Command, now the Isthmus Museum, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
Dating from the same era is its bullring—one of the three oldest buildings in the city and a fine example of Andalusian civic architecture from the late 19th century. It was inaugurated on 20 May 1883 by the matadors Antonio Carmona “El Gordito”, “Frascuelo” and “El Marinero”, and has since seen many of the greatest figures in bullfighting grace its ring. For this reason, La Línea’s bullfighting history stands proudly alongside that of neighbouring Jerez or El Puerto de Santa María.
Built on the site of the old Plaza del Arenal, the arena is still known by that name. It underwent a major renovation completed in 2022, thanks to European (FEDER) funding, and was grandly reopened to reclaim its place as a key bullfighting venue in this part of Cádiz.
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural – BIC) by the Andalusian Regional Government in 2005, the most notable change was the reconstruction of the second tier of seating, which had been demolished in 1979 due to its poor condition. The refurbishment enhanced the distinctive geometry of the building—it is a regular polygon with 49 sides (the only bullring in the world with an odd-numbered regular polygonal shape)—and restored its late-Baroque appearance, a style that had always defined this arena.
Last year, the bullring celebrated its 140th anniversary in style, with prestigious line-ups and the grandeur it has always enjoyed—and which continues in 2025 with an exciting programme. Two top-class bullfights will take place on 18 and 20 July. On the first day, no less than Morante de la Puebla, Talavante and the young prodigy Marco Pérez will face bulls from El Capea and San Pelayo.
On Sunday 20 July, the spotlight turns to the legendary Victorino Martín herd, whose bulls will be fought mano a mano by two stylish matadors, Emilio de Justo and David Galván—both of whom have previously triumphed with these famously challenging grey bulls marked with the crowned A.
In between, on Saturday 19 July, a novillada (young bullfighter showcase) will feature rising stars Ignacio Candelas, Miriam Cabas and Juan Jesús Rodríguez with bulls from the Portuguese breeder Condessa de Sobral. A high-quality set of events to strengthen the identity of a bullring and a fair that is both elegant and exclusive—the pride and joy of this southern “Corner” of Spain.
