Huesca: Basil, Sunshine and Peñas

Forget elitism and stern faces: the 2026 Huesca Bullfighting Fair proves that the bullring is simply the perfect excuse to uncork the wine pitcher, fire up the brass bands and embrace the most authentic San Lorenzo atmosphere. Dare to experience it for yourself!

There are cities where people attend bullfights to act self-important, wave their handkerchiefs with serious expressions and demand textbook purity. Huesca is not one of them. In Huesca, from 7th to 14th August, the bullring is simply another bar within the San Lorenzo festivities — just one with a bullring in the middle. Anyone searching for mysticism or the supposed centre of the bullfighting world has come to the wrong place; here, people arrive after lunch, ready for music, celebration and with the traditional green scarf firmly tied around their neck.

This year’s fair offers a solid and appealing line-up without trying to reinvent the wheel, but with more than enough star power to fill the stands. The company Tauroemoción has organised a season ticket package featuring the leading names of today’s bullfighting scene, enhanced by the long-awaited return of Victorino Martín’s bulls to the Huesca arena after thirteen years away. A treat for the most demanding aficionados, sharing the week with the famous names guaranteed to create an electric atmosphere in the stands.

The fair truly gets underway on San Lorenzo Day itself, Monday 10th August. El Fandi, Tomás Rufo and Marco Pérez will face bulls from El Torero in a line-up designed to get the sunny-side stands buzzing from the very beginning. On Tuesday 11th, Talavante, Emilio de Justo and local Aragonese favourite Aarón Palacio will take on bulls from El Pilar. Wednesday 12th promises the biggest crowd of the fair, with Roca Rey joined by Sebastián Castella and Cristiano Torres facing the Luis Algarra bulls.

The more serious side of the fair arrives on Thursday 13th with the demanding Victorino Martín bullfight — an afternoon for true specialists — featuring El Cid, Manuel Escribano and Morenito de Aranda. Finally, on Friday 14th, the traditional rejoneo event closes the programme with Leonardo Hernández, Lea Vicens and Sergio Pérez de Gregorio before the city enters the final stretch of its celebrations.

But let’s be honest: what happens in the ring is only half the story. In Huesca, the bullfighting day starts at eight in the morning with the vaquillas — young bulls released in the ring — the perfect refuge for those carrying on from the night before or for early risers eager to witness the first excitement on the sand. After vermouth time and the obligatory local dish of pork strips with tomato sauce, the bullring transforms in the afternoon into a boiling sea of white and green.

While spectators in the shade attempt to keep their composure and follow the bullfight attentively, the sunny-side stands belong entirely to the peñas — the local festive clubs. There, the scent of basil mixes with melon and cured ham, cool boxes overflow with drinks and the traditional wine pitcher constantly passes from hand to hand to the sound of brass bands. The bull is respected, of course, but protocol is certainly not worshipped.

For international visitors, San Lorenzo and its bullring are the ultimate cure for snobbery and boredom. In a bullfighting world often obsessed with rigidity and elitism, Huesca offers a masterclass in what a popular festival should truly be: democratic, noisy and gloriously fun. Coming here as a visitor is not simply about watching a bullfight; it is about becoming part of a collective celebration where a stranger will hand you a wine pitcher in the sunny stands, where you will share snacks from your neighbour’s basket and where you will realise that the finest performance of the afternoon is the joy experienced together in the streets. Everyone should experience this bullring at least once in their life, if only to remember that bullfighting, before becoming art or ritual, belonged to the people.
