As we explained in a previous article, the term encaste<\/em> refers to the result of crossing different bloodlines of fighting cattle. All of them originate from what are commonly known as the Foundational Castes<\/a>, from which the fighting bull as we know it today descends.<\/p>\n

With Partido de Resina<\/a> as the main representative of the Gallardo caste, Miura from the Cabrera line, and Prieto de la Cal<\/a> and Concha y Sierra<\/a> from the Vazque\u00f1a strain \u2014 along with the recent resurgence of the Navarra caste through the Reta breeding programme \u2014 almost all other bloodlines derive primarily from the Vistahermosa caste<\/strong>, which has proven to be the most suitable for modern bullfighting.<\/p>\n

Throughout this article, we will look at the main bloodlines of today\u2019s fighting cattle and their respective branches, which enrich the genetic heritage of the essential raw material of this art.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

PARLAD\u00c9 BLOODLINE<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

As mentioned earlier, this bloodline originates from the Vistahermosa caste and is divided into four main branches: Domecq, N\u00fa\u00f1ez, Gamero C\u00edvico and Pedrajas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Domecq branch<\/strong>, created by Juan Pedro Domecq N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/a> de Villavicencio, is currently the most widespread. It has several important offshoots, including Mar\u00eda Antonia Fonseca\u2013Aldeanueva, Torrestrella, Osborne and Marqu\u00e9s de Domecq. Some of the most prominent breeding farms from this line \u2014 among many that appear regularly at major bullfighting festivals \u2014 include Juan Pedro Domecq, Jandilla<\/a>, Victoriano del R\u00edo, N\u00fa\u00f1ez del Cuvillo and Garcigrande.<\/p>\n

The N\u00fa\u00f1ez line<\/strong> was created by Carlos N\u00fa\u00f1ez Manso using cattle of Rinc\u00f3n and Villamarta origin. Although it has lost prominence in recent years, it still includes respected breeding farms that appear frequently in major events, with Alcurruc\u00e9n standing out as the most significant.<\/p>\n

The Gamero C\u00edvico and Pedrajas branches<\/strong> are now far less common. Gamero C\u00edvico has strong representation in Portugal, where many leading breeding farms carry this bloodline. In Spain, it was particularly important during the 1970s and 1980s through the Samuel Flores breeding programme, which today no longer enjoys the same standing. Very little remains of the Garc\u00eda Pedrajas origin; its last stronghold, following the disappearance of the Mar\u00eda Luisa Dom\u00ednguez line, is the breeding farm of Isa\u00edas and Tulio V\u00e1zquez.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

CONDE DE LA CORTE BLOODLINE<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Although it has lost much of its prominence in recent decades, this bloodline can be considered a foundational genetic trunk. In fact, part of the genetic formula of the Domecq bloodline comes from this lineage, dating back to the period when it was owned by Ram\u00f3n Mora Figueroa.<\/p>\n

The most successful branch of this bloodline is Conde de la Corte<\/strong>, along with its extension through Lisardo S\u00e1nchez. Breeding farms of this origin that still carry significant weight today include Dolores Aguirre<\/a>, Jos\u00e9 Enrique Fraile, Valdefresno<\/a> and Adelaida Rodr\u00edguez.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

SALTILLO BLOODLINE<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Dating back to 1854, the Saltillo bloodline is one of the oldest. It forms the genetic base of the vast majority of Mexican fighting bull breeding programmes. In Spain, the Albaserrada line<\/strong> predominates, with Victorino Mart\u00edn and Adolfo Mart\u00edn<\/a> as its main representatives, along with Jos\u00e9 Escolar, whose cattle result from a blend with the Buend\u00eda branch of Santa Coloma.<\/p>\n

The Santa Coloma bloodline<\/strong> itself is the result of crossing Ibarra and Saltillo cattle. Of its three main branches, Buend\u00eda \u2014 the most widespread \u2014 contains more Saltillo blood, while the Graciliano and Coquilla branches have a greater proportion of Ibarra blood. Breeding farms such as La Quinta<\/a> (Buend\u00eda line), Valdell\u00e1n, Juan Luis Fraile<\/a> and Coquilla de S\u00e1nchez Arjona continue to uphold these bloodlines in modern bullfighting.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Also directly descended from the Vistahermosa caste, the Murube<\/a>\u2013Urquijo bloodline enjoyed well-earned prestige during the 1960s and 1970s. Today, it is used almost exclusively for mounted bullfighting (rejoneo)<\/strong>. Breeding farms such as Capea, Los Espartales<\/a> and Ferm\u00edn Boh\u00f3rquez<\/a> in Spain, along with Passanha, Rom\u00e3o Tenorio and Guiomar Cort\u00e9s de Moura in Portugal, are among the most representative of this lineage.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
